THE CRIMES OF MUSLIMS FROM PLAV AND GUSINJE AGAINST THE SERBIAN POPULATION IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR

ABSTRACT/RESUME:

The article analyses the crimes committed by Plav-Gusinja Muslims against the Serbian population during the Second World War. The article aims to demonstrate the high incidence of crime in areas commonly referred to as marginal or mixed zones with diverse ethnic and religious structures. The Muslim population in the Plav-Gusin area largely supported the collapse of the Yugoslav state in 1941 and subsequently collaborated with both the Italian and German occupiers. The majority supported the inclusion of the Plav-Gusinjska area in the proposed state of “Greater Albania”. The level of support for this collaborationist state indicates that it did not recognize Montenegro and Yugoslavia as its own states in sequence. During the occupation and governance of “Greater Albania”, mass crimes were committed against the Serbian population. Many of the perpetrators of these crimes were absolved or had their sentences reduced by the new socialist authorities in various ways after the Second World War.
