ABSTRACT/RESUME:
After the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was created in 1918, its government and monarch soon come into conflict with the newly established Communist Party of Yugoslavia over the future of the state. The Communist party was outlawed in 1920 and remained illegal throughout the existence of the interwar Yugoslav state. Despite the fact that the successive ruling regimes remained profoundly anti-communist, there was never a meaningful initiative to establish an anti-communist pressure group, whether private or covertly state-run. At the same time, international anti-communist organisations – most notably the Geneva-based International Anti-communist Entente and the Berlin-based Antikomintern – sought to secure a foothold within Yugoslavia. After years of relative neglect, the newly elected government of Milan Stojadinović and Prince regent Pavle, began to explore the possibilities of developing a more meaningful and systematic anti-communist propaganda effort. This shift coincided with the increase in activity by foreign anti-communist organisations. As a result, propaganda efforts intensified, and following a series to private meetings, a newly formed organisation emerged: the Yugoslav Anti-Marxist Committee. Its establishment was the outcome of convergence of external and internal factors – international support and domestic political initiatives.
